CHOUDRANT, La. - Louisiana Tech freshman Sam Forgan shot a second round seven-under-par 65 to lead the Bulldogs in the first day of the 2009 Squire Creek Invitational held Monday at Squire Creek Golf Course.
Forgan, whose 65 tied for the third lowest round in modern Bulldog golf history, wasn't the only Bulldog who saw successas four of his LA Tech teammates posted red numbers in either the first or second round for head coach Jeff Parks.
Parks saw sophomore Cody Santone lead the Bulldogs "A" team during the first two rounds, recording a one-under-par 143 to tie for 11th while Matthew Harvey and Clinton Shepard each fired two-round totals of 147 to tie for 31st place. Cody Blankenship shot a 151 and Jonathan Bale added a 152 as the "A" team finished eighth in the 16-team event heading into Tuesday's final round.
However, the story of the day for LA Tech was Forgan. After struggling with a five-over-par 77 in the morning round, the England native came back to shoot the best round of the tournament in the afternoon.
Forgan was joined on the Bulldogs "Blue" team by sophomore Patrick Blunt, who shot an opening round 78 before rebounding for a four-under-par 68. Sophomore Joel Thelen was the most consistent Bulldog of the day as he recorded back-to-back one-under-par 71s. Thelen and Forgan are tied for 8th place out of 84 golfers heading into Tuesday's final round.
The Bulldogs "Blue" team is tied with Rice for fifth place with a two-round total of 581.
"It definitely shows we have depth," said Parks, who has his 10 student-athletes qualify each week for the upcoming events. "We have a lot of young guys who are very capable golfers. We just need them to all become more consistent.
"I'm proud of the way Sam and Patrick came back after tough morning rounds and performed so well. It was a very wet day of golf for everyone. Everyone had to overcome the conditions."
New Orleans leads the team competition with a two-round team total of nine-under-par 567 while Middle Tennessee and Southeastern Louisiana are tied for second at 573.
Southeastern's Cedric Scotto leads the individual competition with a six-under-par total of 138 followed by UNO's Ken Looper at 139.
Tuesday's final round will begin at 8 a.m.
